"Cupping" is traditionally used in Chinese Medicine to remove toxins from the body and to activate the Qi (life force) circulation. It involves placing traditional glass cups of various sizes, mainly onto the back area - creating a suction effect.
Application of oils allows the cups to be moved over the surface of the skin whilst continuing to retain the suction, creating a very deep tissue massage effect. this treatment is particularly suitable for people who suffer from pain and tension in the back, neck, shoulder and stomach area.
It is a stimulating massage for people who suffer from tiredness and lack of energy, and can also help to improve a sluggish circulation.
"Moxibustion" involves moving hot sticks of Mugwort (better known as St John's Wort in Britain), over the skin of the back and/or problem joint area to create a warming effect. In TCM, it is believed that the heat activates the Chi into a flowing movement down the meridian lines and into the connecting organs.
It is particularly suitable for back/neck/shoulder pain (that is worsened in the cold), headaches (worsened in cold), acute injuries, sprains and strains.
The techniques can be used together or seperately.
